The toll road has excellent skiing from the gate as of Friday afternoon

Happy Holidays, everyone!!! I know all of you are anxious to play with your new toys that Santa brought and are excited about the forecasted storm. I just wanted to highlight a few points. The current snow on the ground is a very low density snow and once buried, depending on the type and amount of snow we get, can potentially become a weak layer. In addition, the winds associated with this storm can produce wind slab and load slopes on the leeward side.

So, before you go play. Put new batteries in your transceivers, test them, practice with them. Look at the forecasted weather, dig your own pits, make your own decisions. Just because a slope has been skied, doesn’t mean there are NO weak layers. Practice safe travel techniques, have a rescue plan and know how to self rescue. Bring your shovel, probe, have a pack, with adequate equipment to handle whatever conditions you may encounter, have a good first aid kit. Have fun and most of all be safe.

Good looking out, Jim. Thanks for the reminders!

Jim, question for you–the “low density snow” that you mentioned, are you specifically seeing faceted snow on the ground now?

    • Jim on December 26, 2012 at 10:18 pm

No, but the snow that is on the ground is of very low density and therefore tends not to create strong bonds. The added weight from this storm can turn that older snow into a potential weak layer

    Raymond brook is excellent

Thanks for putting together this site! Heading to Johns Brook Valley area this weekend- never been skiing in the ADKs. Was planning to try lower Gothics slides. My understanding is that the lower slides are pretty safe and not avalanche-prone. Can anyone confirm?

Wright Peak ski trail improved from Saturady with at least 3″ of fresh dry powder. Hiking trail has deteriorated a bit with a few rocks to avoid. Other than that skiing is great.

Here’s hoping that some of this precipitation falls as snow on the High Peaks!!!!

    March 23-24

Angel slides top half really good, lower half grim. trail from LOJ to Marcy dam really thin. Skin track from the Dam to the base of Angels really good, efficient and good skiing both direction.

Whales tail trail good coverage, couple of water bars.

Wright peak ski trail lots of fresh snow. Approach trail horrible, bring your rock skis.
